General

  • after installation from LiveCD, it is imperative that you delete the file /.buildenv , otherwise your system won't boot after you upgrade the kernel because of a missing initrd file. See Bug #389177 and Bug #392054. [NB: If you happen not to be able to boot because of this, reboot with the livecd, open a console, mount your root partition (say to /mnt/root) (and the boot partition to /mnt/root/boot if necessary), then do "mount /sys --bind /mnt/root/sys", chroot to /mnt/root, delete .buildenv and run mkinitrd to create the missing initrd file.]
  • NVIDIA driver doesn't compile. Workaround: check here for a patch. No patching required if 173.14.05 drivers are used. If you want to install the nvidia legacy driver take a look here.

Missing System Users in 11.0 Beta1

There is a Bug which affects the adding of system users in the following packages on both LiveCD and DVD installation:

  • aaa_base
  • avahi
  • beagle
  • cups
  • dbus-1
  • festival
  • fuse
  • gdm
  • hal
  • ntp
  • openssh
  • PolicyKit
  • postfix
  • pulseaudio
  • pwdutils
  • samba
  • scrollkeeper
  • uuid-runtime
  • yast2-registration

You have to reinstall them to get the correct users created on your system. You can do so either in YaST or use zypper like:

for i in aaa_base avahi beagle cups dbus-1 festival fuse \
gdm hal ntp openssh PolicyKit postfix pulseaudio pwdutils \
 samba scrollkeeper uuid-runtime yast2-registration; \
 do rpm -q $i > /dev/null 2>&1 && zypper in -y -f -n $i; done

openSUSE 11.0 Alpha3

  • PERMISSION_SECURITY set to secure by default (Bug #373654)
  • The kernel OOPSes early in the installation on hardware probe on some hardware [including virtualbox] (Bug #371997 - workaround: boot with hwprobe=-parallel,-misc.par [do not enter space after comma])
  • "Use Automatic Configuration" checkbox is highly experimental, this feature is not yet finished.
  • the root password will be "*****" by default, feel free to change it
  • network startup is racy (Bug #359793), work-around: rcnetwork restart
  • the artwork is not yet complete (e.g. Bug #368624)
  • Autoyast broken (Bug #372322)
  • grub config is empty (Bug #372351) after update - workaround cp /boot/grub/menu.lst.old /boot/grub/menu.lst
  • installation from KDE CD starts xdm (Bug #372506), fix: set in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
  • yast2 icons are missing on the GNOME CD (Bug #372569)
  • installation continues in text mode (Bug #373703)
  • SATA DVD Drive HP Model DH-16A1L is no longer accessible (Bug #373677)

  • NVIDIA driver doesn't compile. Workaround: check here for a patch.
  • Wireless doesn't start up (Bug #376742). Workaround: as root run "/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -u -f /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log &", then kill and restart nm-applet. After a few seconds, the connection should work.
  • Can't switch keyboard layouts with Alt-Alt hotkey (Bug #373197).

openSUSE 11.0 Alpha2

  • Progress dialog Loading the Package Manager... blocks the installation-update proposal (Bug #359235). Although you can accept the proposal by clicking on [Accept] you can't see the proposed data/values.
  • Linuxrc crashes when you change default language and display. (Bug #360867). You can accept the default proposal and change them in YaST later.
  • KDE3 autostart applications may crash on KDE4 Startup (Bug #359800)

  • Frozen shutdown on a dell precision 690 Bug #365491

openSUSE 11.0 Alpha1

  • PPC can not be installed or upgraded at all via the inst-sys, because yast crashes very early due to miscompilation in the LIMAL package. Upgrade from a fresh 10.3 or 11.0 Alpha0 release.
  • X11 config is crashing (Bug #354386). This makes second stage installation crash too. After system reboots, YaST asks whether you want to rerun the aborted second stage installation and if you do so, installation crashes again at the end. Workaround is to skip rerunning it and configure X11, sound, TV and printers on a running system.

openSUSE 11.0 Alpha0

  • Hyperlinks in installation proposals (partitioning, network, firewall, X, printer...) don't work in Qt (Bug #346158). You have to use the [Change...] button at the bottom of those dialogs. This will be fixed with an updated yast2-core (-2.16.13) in factory.
  • Some YaST dialogs that use a tree (Sysconfig, Firewall, DNS-Server, DHCP-Server, ...) don't work in Qt (Bug #346165). This will be fixed with an updated yast2-core (-2.16.3) in factory. In the meantime, you can use the NCurses (text based) version.
  • A new YaST UI engine (a.k.a. "mod-ui") has changed the appearance of some dialogs (Language selection, Registration AKA Online Update Configuration, ...)(Bug #345819).
  • First Stage Installation might get finished with "An error occurred...". This is caused be some wrong handling in YaST (core?) when finishing the y2base process (should not cause any huge problem).
